Angiomas, also known as cherry angiomas or cherry warts, are benign skin bumps that arise from blood vessels in the skin. They are often small, round or oval and bright red to purple in colour. They occur all over the body, but most commonly on the face, trunk, arms and legs. Usually angiomas are benign, but they can be cosmetically disturbing or cause discomfort. Keep a close eye on the skin for any changes or new spots and always contact a doctor if in doubt.
Cause
The exact cause of angiomas is unknown, but it probably runs in the family. UV radiation from the sun, age, skin damage and hormonal changes are also thought to be causes. People with weakened immune systems and a history of exposure to chemicals may also have an increased risk of developing angiomas.
Treatment
Cherry angiomas do not require treatment. If these skin patches are considered troublesome, they can be treated properly. A skin therapist or doctor may use laser therapy, electrocoagulation, cryotherapy or surgery to treat angiomas.
